Direct National Foreign Patent Filings

Patent applications can be filed directly in foreign patent offices.  The foreign patent offices review the respective applications for patentability.  When approved, the foreign patent office issues the foreign patent.

Foreign applications filed within one year of a US (or other country) patent application can claim priority (i.e. the effective filing date) of the earlier filed US application.

Filing in a foreign country involves hiring a foreign associate (i.e. a local patent attorney), translating the application and related documents to the required language, complying any existing application to local regulations, and then prosecuting the application.

Hiring a foreign associate can be an expensive and risky proposition.  The attorneys must be qualified to do the work and to appreciate the technical subject matter.  Bad associates can miss deadlines, communicate poorly, and exceed budgets.

We act as our clients outside patent counsel to engage with only the best foreign associates.  We investigate and qualify our foreign associates.  We maintain personal relationships with the foreign associates.  We use strict procedures to communicate with the foreign associates and we only work with foreign attorneys who comply with our budgeting and billing requirements.
